Emeritus Professor Tony Moffat

Position

Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis

Areas of Expertise

Pharmaceutical Analysis, Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Spectrometry, Forensic Science, Drugs of Abuse, Forensic Toxicology, Validation Protocols in Pharmaceutical Analysis, (especially the Regulatory Requirements), Cannabis as a Medicine.

Biography

Tony Moffat was Head of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Analysis at The School of Pharmacy, University of London.  He retired from full-time employment with the University in 2007 and was then appointed Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis.  He was previously Chief Scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Before that he was superintendent pharmacist of a community pharmacy, a chief pharmacist in a hospital and worked for 23 years in the Forensic Science Service as Research Co-ordinator (Birmingham Laboratory), Resources Manager (Huntingdon Laboratory), Head of Quality Management (Headquarters, London), Assistant Director (Huntingdon Library) and Head of the Drugs and Toxicology Division (Aldermaston Laboratory).

His awards include the British Pharmaceutical Conference Science Award, Society of Analytical Chemistry Silver Medal, Joint winner of the Buchi Award, Honorary Fellowship of The School of Pharmacy, Charter Gold Medal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the Medal of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Research Interests

His main interest has been the development of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic methods of analysis both of raw materials and intact tablets. Close collaboration with the British pharmaceutical industry has ensured that the methods are those that are required and can be adopted by them in their quality control laboratories and production sites across the world.

More recently, the development of fast, non-destructive methods for identifying counterfeit medicines has received regulatory interest both nationally and internationally.

He has supervised 22 PhD students and 6 postdoctoral researchers at The School. He has 333 publications: 7 books, 181 full research papers, 104 short communications and 41 other publications.
