Areas of Expertise

Phytochemistry, structure elucidation of plant natural products, antibacterials and bacterial resistance modifying agents from plants, efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs).

Research Interests

Antibacterial natural products from plants:

  • Acylphloroglucinol natural products from the Guttiferae
  • Antibacterials with activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Propionibacterium acnes
  • Alliaceae, Liliaceae and Lamiaceae antimicrobial agents
  • Herbal Medicinal Product anti-infective agents
  • Cannabinoid antimicrobials

Bacterial Multidrug-Resistance (MDR) Modifying Agents and Efflux Pump Inhibitors (EPIs):

  • Inhibitors of antibiotic efflux in Staphylococcus aureus
  • Plant natural products as EPIs of Salmonella sp efflux mechanisms
  • Mechanisms of MDR inhibition
  • Interactions between MDR inhibitors and substrates for MDR processes

Phytochemistry:

  • Structure elucidation of natural products
  • Phytochemistry in quality control of herbal medicinal products
  • Plant acetylenes, acylphloroglucinols, diterpenes and sulphur containing metabolites
