Biography

Lynda Wilton obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Exeter and her PhD from the University of Southampton. Whilst an undergraduate she worked at the Royal Naval Physiological Laboratory (UK), during the summer vacation. After completing her PhD she worked for several years in inhalation toxicology and during this time had a short sabbatical working with Professor Aviado at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1980 she joined the Drug Safety Research Unit (DSRU) when it was founded and became its Principal Research Fellow. The major activity of the DSRU is monitoring the safety of recently marketed medicines prescribed in primary care, using the technique of Prescription-Event Monitoring (PEM). Lynda was involved in the setting up of this methodology and also in its ongoing development, including its use to monitor the outcomes of pregnancy and the use of newly marketed medicines in children.

Lynda is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Drug Safety and also serves on the Elections Committee and the Education and Training Committee of the International Society of Pharmacovigilance. She has held honorary posts at the University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth. Lynda also lectures on drug safety both in the UK and abroad, including Europe and India.

Research Interests

Lynda Wilton’s main research interests are the use of medicines in children, especially ‘off label’ use of newly marketed medicines and also the use of medicines by pregnant women. She also recognises the importance of good training of personnel working within drug safety and hence her involvement in the development of training courses in India with Symogen UK Ltd.
